Major gift work takes time, tenacity, and a solid relationship with an investor. When the right partnership develops, it will yield major funding. The revenue generated from major gifts makes up over half of the annual philanthropic income for most nonprofits (for many, it is 80-90%). Without a strong major gifts’ program, you cannot afford to operate and sustain your organization.

The good news is that it’s never too late to begin a major gift program, and it’s never too early to start one. This multi-day workshop will prepare you to secure major gift funding whether you are new to major gift work or you want to expand or strengthen an existing major gift program. You’ll have the opportunity to practice asking for a major gift and to explore strategies that will ensure major gift success.

This course is designed for intermediate to advanced fundraising professionals and participants are recommended to have 2-3 year of development experience.

This workshop is an elective option for the Certificate in Fundraising and Development.

You will learn how to:

  1. Involve major gift investors in ways that are meaningful to them.
  2. Integrate volunteers into your major gift team.
  3. Evaluate prospect research findings to rank prospective major gift investors and develop strategies for individualized campaign plans.
  4. Ask prospective investors for financial investments in ways that meet their needs.
  5. Develop strong, professional relationships with investors through extraordinary stewardship that focuses on a high rate of return on their investment.

 Time: 9:15 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. both days

Complimentary coffee and beverage service is provided throughout the day. Breakfast bars in the morning and a light snack in the afternoon are also provided. You have a one hour lunch (not provided) break and will be given a list of restaurants within walking distance.

Instructor: Terri Chastain, CFRE, Consultant

Terri Chastain, CFRE, is a fundraising and training consultant for the Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership at Rollins College, providing workshop instruction, curriculum development, and other consulting services. 

She has over 25 years of experience working for nonprofit organizations, including serving as Senior Campaign Director for Harbor House of Central Florida’s $7.4 million capital campaign and Development Director for the Adult Literacy League and UCP of Central Florida, where she was part of a capital campaign committee team that raised $6 million.  Her experience includes proposal writing; special events; major gifts; training & management of staff, board, and volunteers; corporate support; annual fund; and in-kind support, as well as direct program service in the fields of children’s, family, and disability/special needs services. 

Ms. Chastain has worked in the nonprofit and government sectors since completing her Bachelor’s degree at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. She is a member, and a former board member, of the Association for Fundraising Professionals and a Certified Fund Raising Executive, CFRE.
