This two-day workshop will help you learn to relate to each of your donors in a personal way based on an understanding of their behavioral style as well as your own and enhance your communication and rapport.

In real estate, it's "location, location, location." In fundraising, it's "relationship, relationship, relationship." No matter what fundraising vehicle you use - major gifts, annual fund, special events, planned giving - success depends on relationship building. This two-day workshop will help you learn to relate to each of your donors in a personal way based on an understanding of their behavioral style as well as your own and enhance your communication and rapport. Participants will complete the DiSC assessment at the workshop. This workshop addresses intermediate-to-advanced level instruction in donor relationship building. The workshop is a perfect complement to the Major Gifts workshop.

  • How to recognize and understand differing communication styles
  • Your own personality and communication style through the DiSC assessment tool
  • How to respond appropriately to the communication styles of prospective donors
  • The interactive effects of different communication styles
  • New communication skills that will benefit your fundraising efforts
  • Understanding behavioral types as a way to analyze and strategize
  • Developing an appreciation for the principles of donor-centered fundraising
  • Understanding the fundraising cycle and reviewing fundraising methodologies
  • Becoming familiar with successful "ask” behaviors
  • Learn simple tools to help you overcome fear and succeed

Complimentary beverage service is provided throughout the day. Breakfast bars in the morning and a light snack in the afternoon are also provided. You have a one hour lunch (not provided) break each day and will be given a list of restaurants within walking distance.

Instructors: Mark Freeman and Karen Revels, Sr. Manager of Philanthropy, Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership

Mark Freeman is a senior organizational development and behavioral consultant, primarily working in the academic, hospitality, and healthcare industry. His work in the area of performance improvement includes change management, fund raising consulting, organizational training and development for management, business development, and executive leadership coaching. As an executive coach he has extensive experience with a wide variety of corporate and not for profit clients. Mark designs custom curricula for leadership programs. Mark trains development officers in the art and science of major gift fundraising.

Mark works as a leadership consultant for Saint Helena Hospital, Florida Hospital Kissimmee, Florida Hospital Foundation, Florida Hospital Institute for Lifestyle Medicine, Florida Hospital for Children, Celebration Health, Healthy 100, Potomac Ridge Behavioral Health, Sloan-Kettering, Rollins College, The University of Central Florida, Stetson University, Valencia College, Seminole State College, Florida Technical University, Crummer Graduate School, The Philanthropy and Non-Profit Leadership Center, Management and Executive Education, Corporate University, Morton, Plant, and Mease, Channel 13, Olive Garden, Darden, Vineyard 29, Tupperware, The American Chestnut Foundation, The Orlando Ballet, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Orlando, and a variety of other for profit and not for profit organizations in Florida and California. He is trained in conflict mediation and offers a myriad of seminars and workshops designed to enhance organizational development, fundraising acumen, change management, and performance excellence. Mark primarily works at the senior leadership and middle management level of the organizations he serves.

Karen Revels is the Executive Director at the CannonBall Kids' Cancer Foundation. Previously, she served as the Senior Manager of Philanthropy at the Edyth Bush Institute overseeing the Annual Philanthropy Conference, symposiums, research projects, and The Donors Forum of Central Florida.  Karen played a key role in managing the Leadership Certificate, executive transition and advanced fundraising programs and still serves as an instructor at the Institute.   

Karen has more than 16 years of nonprofit management and fundraising experience in roles as Executive Director with The American Cancer Society and the International Fibrodisplaysia Ossificans Progressiva Association; and as Development Director with The Jewish Community Center and the Institute of Internal Auditors.  In addition, she founded the Howard Middle School Foundation, most recently serving as President; served as a foster parent; and regularly volunteers with Lake Eola Charter School, Trinity Lutheran School, and First Presbyterian Orlando. 

She was awarded the Women of Distinction Award from the Citrus Council of Girl Scouts, is a graduate of Leadership Orlando Class 69 and Leadership Brevard Class 2005.  She received a B.S. in Public Administration from University of Central Florida and completed her Professional Masters of Science in Management from the University of Central Florida in July 2015.
