Prepare your organization for long-term fundraising success. This workshop provides a comprehensive overview of the fundraising process using ethical, reliable methods that will give your organization the resilience to weather economic ups and downs. While designed for those at beginner or intermediate levels of fundraising experience, it is also required for those working to earn their Certificate in  Fundraising and Development.

Participants will learn the basic questions and answers of fundraising:

Q: When are you ready to fundraise? 
A: Institutional readiness, planning, & the case for support

Q: What do you raise money for? 
A: Operations, endowment, special projects, & capital

Q: From whom do you raise money? 
A: Individuals, foundations, corporations, & other organizations 

Q: How do you fundraise? 
A: Overview of the various strategies and methods used: from annual giving & e-philanthropy to major gifts & comprehensive campaigns

Q: What helps you fundraise? 
A: Infrastructure: staffing, technology, research, & stewardship 

Q: Who does the fundraising? 
A: Managing staff & volunteers 

As a result of this course, you will:

  • Understand the components of an ethical, comprehensive, and productive development program.
  • Emerge with a comprehensive understanding of the various vehicles and methods of fundraising.
  • Recognize and organize a layered approach to fundraising, which provides for multiple needs and markets.
  • Know better how to work with volunteers, Boards, and other colleagues.
  • Become a more effective representative of the development perspective within his/her workplace.

2018 Fundamentals of Successful Fundraising Dates:
Tuesday through Friday, January 9 - 12, 2018; 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
(Day 3 will include a working lunch – please bring a brown bag lunch.)

This program was rescheduled from September 11-14, 2017 due to Hurricane Irma.

Instructor: Karen Revels, Senior Manager of Philanthropy. Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership

Karen Revels is the Senior Manager of Philanthropy at the Edyth Bush Institute overseeing the Annual Philanthropy Conference, symposiums, research projects, and The Donors Forum of Central Florida. In addition, she oversees the Leadership Certificate and executive transition and advanced fundraising programs and is an instructor for many Institute workshops.

Karen has more than 17 years of nonprofit management and fundraising experience in roles as Executive Director with The American Cancer Society and the International Fibrodisplaysia Ossificans Progressiva Association; and as Development Director with The Jewish Community Center and the Institute of Internal Auditors. In addition, she currently serves as President of the Lake Eola Charter School PTSA and founded the Howard Middle School Foundation, most recently serving as President; served as a foster parent; and regularly volunteers with Trinity Lutheran School, and First Presbyterian Orlando.

She was awarded the Women of Distinction Award from the Citrus Council of Girl Scouts, is a graduate of Leadership Orlando Class 69 and Leadership Brevard Class 2005. She received both a B.S. in Public Administration and Masters of Science in Management from the University of Central Florida.
