We welcome guest blogger, Katherine Fischer, with Harbor House of Central Florida, discussing social media for nonprofits.

As I scrolled through the calendar of events at the Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership, the class “Maximizing Your Mission through Social Media” caught my eye. I’ve been to many social media workshops, but this one left me with several gems to use back in the office. The instructor, Rich Wahl, covered the top social media channels and trends. If you want to know how, when, where, and why to use social media – this is the class for you.

To piggyback off of Rich’s insight, I want to share some additional resources I’ve found helpful in the world of social media marketing. If you learn best by listening, I highly recommend the Social Fresh podcast. Every week, they interview a digital marketing expert to talk about the tools they love – a great way to stay on top of trends. I’ve found that infographics are valuable shareworthy content (remember content is king!). You can create your own through Piktochart using free or paid templates. At Harbor House, I sent one to our database which returned positive feedback from supporters. Always a good thing! If you want to get your Board of Directors more involved, I recommend sending them pre-crafted social media posts. That way, they copy, paste, and post. The more seamless the process, the better. On a final note, I noticed Rich included the resource “Nonprofit Tech for Good” in his presentation. This is an excellent website for articles, free webinars, and newsletters on digital marketing for nonprofits. Their website is bursting with fresh content and countless resources. You won’t be disappointed!

When you’re getting started with social media, it can all seem overwhelming. It’s important to remember you don’t need to be on ten social media platforms or use every tool out there. Start small, focus on one platform, and go from there. This technology is new and burgeoning – we’re all trying to figure it out! Please feel free to email me if you have questions. I’m happy to help you jump into the crazy, ever-evolving world of social media!

Biography

Katherine Fischer here, I’m the Online Giving Coordinator for Harbor House of Central Florida. That’s a fancy way of saying I manage the digital marketing, brand awareness, and online engagement for a fabulous organization helping families flee abuse and find restoration. Before this rewarding position, I studied film and marketing at the University of Central Florida and traveled the country honing my craft in both industries. As if that weren’t enough, I recently founded a style blog, The Dashing Hemline, to fulfill a life-long passion and empower women to define their style with a dash of adventure. I’d love to connect with you online or you can email me at: FischerK10@gmail.com.
