In this workshop participants will receive a basic overview of the steps for starting a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Participants will also receive practical information about the mission statement, board of directors, bylaws, conflict of interest and funding expectations.

You will learn:

  • to define a 501c3 nonprofit
  • alternatives to starting a 501c3 nonprofit
  • the federal and state requirements for starting a 501c3 nonprofit

Instructor: Brian Henties, Program Manager, Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership Center

Brian has many years of nonprofit management and fundraising development experience, including serving as an executive director, development director and serving on several nonprofit boards of directors in leadership roles. He also helped to found a nonprofit corporation, Catch the Building Spirit. As program manager, he is responsible for the areas of nonprofit management, fundraising and development and legislative advocacy. He manages the Center's Certificate in Nonprofit Management, Certificate in Fundraising and Development, Certificate in Proposal Writing and Certificate in Volunteer Management. At the college, he teaches Steps for Starting a 501c3 Nonprofit, Step by Step IRS Form 1023 and Nonprofit Legislative Advocacy. Brian is a graduate of the University of Dayton.
