Prepare your organization for long-term fundraising success. This workshop provides a comprehensive overview of the fundraising process using ethical, reliable methods that will give your organization the resilience to weather economic ups and downs. Designed for those at beginner or intermediate levels of fundraising experience, it is also required for those working to earn their Certificate in  Fundraising and Development.

Note: This workshop includes interactive activities requiring working lunches for participants on Day Two and Day Three. Participants must register for and attend all 4 sessions.

Participants will learn the basic questions and answers of fundraising:

Q: When are you ready to fundraise?
A: Institutional readiness, planning, & the case for support

Q: What do you raise money for?
A: Operations, endowment, special projects, & capital

Q: From whom do you raise money?
A: Individuals, foundations, corporations, & other organizations

Q: How do you fundraise?
A: Overview of the various strategies and methods used: from annual giving & e-philanthropy to major gifts & comprehensive campaigns

Q: What helps you fundraise?
A: Infrastructure: staffing, technology, research, & stewardship

Q: Who does the fundraising?
A: Managing staff & volunteers

As a result of this course, you will:

  • Understand the components of an ethical, comprehensive, and productive development program.
  • Emerge with a comprehensive understanding of the various vehicles and methods of fundraising.
  • Recognize and organize a layered approach to fundraising, which provides for multiple needs and markets.
  • Know better how to work with volunteers, Boards, and other colleagues.
  • Become a more effective representative of the development perspective within his/her workplace.

Instructors: Barbara Blackwell, Esq, Director of Development, Lake Highland Preparatory School and Terri Chastain, CFRE, Consultant

Barbara BlackwellCurrently the Director of Development at Lake Highland Preparatory School, Barbara has over 25 years of experience in Development. She also has a law degree with emphasis on both tax-exempt organizations and the tax issues surrounding charitable giving. Barbara has served as Vice President for Advancement at Washington & Jefferson College (1999-2003). There she headed a $93 million comprehensive campaign. As Vice President for Development and Donor Relations at The Pittsburgh Foundation (1996-1999), she worked with a wide variety of non-profit organizations and their fundraising initiatives. These diverse leadership experiences along with prior experience as a Major Gift Officer at Amherst College and Director of Annual Giving at Allegheny College have provided her with a unique background and sought after expertise in fundraising.

Terri ChastainTerri Chastain, CFRE, is a fundraising and training consultant for the Rollins College Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership Center. She has over 25 years of experience working for nonprofit organizations, including serving as Development Director for the Adult Literacy League and UCP of Central Florida. Her experience includes major gifts; training & management of staff, board, and volunteers; foundation & corporate support; annual fund; special events; and in-kind support, as well as direct program service in the fields of children’s, family, and disability / special needs services. Ms. Chastain has worked in the nonprofit and government sectors since completing her undergraduate education at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. She is a member, and a former board member, of the Association for Fundraising Professionals; a member and former board member of the Grant Professionals Network of Central Florida; and a Certified Fund Raising Executive, CFRE.
